Lost and Found

Encourage your children to check the Lost and Found for any lost items. The unclaimed items are donated at the end of the school year.

HOOTBAM

On June 5th, the 6th grade teams will participate in HOOTBAM.

HOOTBAM stands for Haven Odessey Of The Body And Mind. The students will participate in a morning filled with events (track, swimming, fencing, tennis, frisbee, ladder golf, and baggo) and an afternoon of team building and brain games.

8th Grade Bridge Crossing

On June 11th, parents of 8th grade students are welcome to line up in the front of the middle school or in the front of the high school and watch their children cross the bridge. This long-standing tradition honors our students as they take their symbolic walk to their next destination, leaving the middle school behind.

Students will cross at 8:30 AM so come early to park and find a spot to stand and watch.

Immediately following, the 8th-grade award ceremony will take place in the high school auditorium.  This event is by invitation only.

Rising 6th Graders

Do you have or know a rising 6th grader? Order your teacher-approved kit today. These kits are optional and families are welcome to buy their own school supplies. The kits will be available for pickup in August starting at the Morning at the Middle School event.

Please note, that these kits are only for 5th graders who will be entering the middle school next year. School Supply lists for rising 7th and 8th graders will be on the school website.

Hidden Hollow Meeting Thursday, 6/4

There will be an information/expectation meeting for all students attending the Hidden Hollow Field Trip. It will be on Thursday, 6/4 in the auditorium from 2:30-3pm. Students unable to attend should get information they missed from a friend.

Lessons Officially Over

The last beginner lesson was held this past Friday. Just because lessons are over, though, doesn't mean the learning has to stop! Here is a list of private lesson instructors in the area. I highly recommend signing your student up for some one-on-one instruction. It can be a game changer!

INSTRUMENTS!

Is your student's instrument at home? Is there a school instrument at home that hasn't been checked yet?

  • If your student's instrument is NOT at home, it is very likely in my instrument storage room. I've made announcements the past few school days to pick them up, but I will now be reaching out to individuals/families so they can be taken home and played! If it's not at home and it's not in my storage room, check the trunk of your cars. Trust me.

  • If you have a school instrument at home and it has NOT been checked out by me (or you have an 8th grader that will use a HS instrument next year), please have it dropped off at the front office. I will give it a clean/maintenance check and return it to you before the end of the school year.

DON'T FORGET - Summer Music 2026!

Our Summer Music Program has gotten a refresh, and I for one and very excited for the changes! This summer program is open to chorus, strings, and band students both in and out of district. It's a great opportunity to keep kids playing and singing, all while making new friends and hearing new music! Click this link to view the flyer and find out more!

Thanking our Music Teachers

Please consider donating to the WSMA end of year appreciation gifts for our district music teachers. The deadline is June 5th.

WSSD Music Camp

Registration is now open for the WSSD Summer Music Program. The program has some BIG changes this year! It is open to chorus, strings, and band students - both in and out of district. It's a great opportunity to keep kids playing and singing, all while making new friends and hearing new music!  Check out the flyer below and make sure to sign up!

Clearances Required

In order to volunteer for events and activities at SHMS (concessions, musical, dances, book fair, etc.), ALL volunteers need their clearances on file with the school district. Please submit these now, as opportunities come up quickly and it's good to have them in place now. If you are unsure of your status, please contact Heather Fili at hfili@wssd.org

You can find what clearances you need to submit here.

SHMS HSA Website, Student Directory, & Online Store

SHMS HSA Website, Student Directory, & Online Store

Please check out the HSA web page! In addition to getting up-to-date information on activities, all families have FREE access to the online Student Directory (you must set up an account). The HSA offers the Directory at no cost to our families thanks to our website sponsors. Important: The email address families use to log in to MTK must be the same as the primary email address contact in PowerSchool. The Directory team recently completed a mid-year update of student/family contact information. If you are having trouble accessing the Directory or wish to change whether your family's contact information is displayed, please email Jennifer Griffin (jensgriffin@gmail.com - parent volunteer) or Derrick Clements (dclements@wssd.org - WSSD staff member in the registration office).

Calling All Sponsors

Do you have a business or know someone who would like to become a sponsor helping fund all of the great activities that the Home and School support? This is a great opportunity to reach over 1,000 parents in the community.

For $150 the sponsorship includes a banner ad featuring the sponsor's logo on our SHMS HSA home page.  This clickable logo will lead the reader to the respective business website. The ad will remain on our website for the entire 2025-2026 school year.

WSSD Capital Plan

Dear WSSD Community Stakeholders,

We’re excited to share some important news about the future of our schools. On June 18, the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District Board of School Directors approved the scope for the district’s comprehensive long-range capital plan that will guide investment in our facilities for years to come.

An overview of the plan is attached and can be accessed through the following link. We encourage you to take a look and help share it through newsletters, on social media, or in conversations with neighbors so more members of our community can stay informed.

This plan focuses on three big goals:

  • Keeping our schools warm, safe, and dry for all students and staff.
  • Making sure our buildings are the right size to support today’s enrollment and future growth.
  • Creating spaces that meet the needs of our educational programs so every student can thrive.

The plan was shaped through several years of study, community input, and a careful look at our enrollment projections, building conditions, and overall capacity.

You can learn more about the WSSD Capital Plan here.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our schools.

Warmly,

Rachel Riley
