National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day - April 22nd

The HSA thanks all of the WSSD bus drivers and aides that help get our students safely to and from school everyday. We provided breakfast treats and snacks for them to enjoy throughout the day. Thank you for their service to WSSD!

Administrative Professionals Day - April 23rd

The HSA would like to thank our Administrative Professionals that work in the front office to help our students and families. Amanda Jacobsen, Krissy McIIhenney and Kourtney Dix are so helpful to the HSA, the administration, teachers and our students.

Welcome To Our New Assistant Principal - Kevin Kelly

The HSA warmly welcomes our new assistant principal, who will start on May 1st. He will help oversee the 8th grade class with Mrs. Hockfield as they wrap up the school year. Please join us at our next HSA meeting on May 15th to meet him. Here is more information about Mr. Kelly.

Hello! My name is Kevin Kelly and I am thrilled to be the new assistant principal at Strath Haven Middle School. This is not only an exciting step for me professionally, but also personally -- I graduated from SHHS in 2000 and formed some lifelong friendships as well as sparked my passion for education as a student at SHMS.

My teaching career began after earning a master's degree at Harvard Divinity School. I remained in New England for several years as a high school instructor before moving to Nashville where I found joy continuing to teach high school, while also nourishing my love for playing music. I met my wife Mary and started a family in Nashville before moving to Philadelphia for Mary begin her medical residency. In Philadelphia, I taught middle school at the John Hancock Demonstration School, soon becoming assistant principal through the guidance of several unforgettable mentors.

When the opportunity arose to serve my home community at SHMS, I jumped at the chance. I hope to bring the skills and experience I developed over the last twenty years as an educator and school leader to this community that has already given me so much.

HSA Positions Available for 2025-2026

We need YOU! We are still looking for a Co-Chair for the HSA. This person will serve a 2 year term and oversee the activities of the HSA. You will have all the behind the scenes access to all that goes on at the Middle School and help support our students, teachers, staff and the administration.

We are getting closer to filling all of our positions! But we still need:

* Spirit Wear Coordinator - Sell spirit wear and maintain inventory of hoodies, shirts and other spirit wear items. Track inventory in MTK and have pop up sales or provide online shops to promote spirit wear items.

* Teacher/Staff Monthly Appreciation Coordinator - Set up teacher breakfasts on in-service days (usually 5-6 times). Purchase items, set up and clean up in the conference room in the front office.

* Sports Concessions Coordinators - Purchase concession items such as candy, chips, drinks and pretzels to sell during the winter sports season. This would involve setting up on days when there are home games for basketball and wrestling. This is one of our biggest fundraisers and would be great to get a committee together.

For questions on any of these positions, please contact the co-chairs at shmshsa.chairs@gmail.com

Middle School Swimming Club

We are exploring interest in forming a Middle School Swim Club! This club will offer a two-week, camp-style training experience in May, culminating in a meet against another local middle school on May 30th. It’s a fantastic opportunity for any middle school student interested in learning about competitive swimming and aquatics.

We are tentatively planning for sessions from May 19th to May 30th, after the Spring Sports season. Practices and clinics will take place after school for about an hour.

Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade are all welcome to join! Information is also posted in Powerschool.
