SUBJECT: SHMS HSA e-blast for 1.18.2023, MLK, Jr. Celebration, In-person HSA Meeting, Career Day, Direct Donation, Yearbooks, Teacher Cof

January 18, 2023

Dear SHMS HSA Families,

On Friday, January 13, our students and staff gave back to the community through numerous projects during the school-wide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Some of our 8th graders went to Cradles to Crayons and City Team where they sorted out toys and clothing and some went to day care centers around the community where they read books during story time. Others went to senior centers and played games and started a dance party. Some went to NPE to help elementary students make a class mural while other stayed at the middle school where they put together bags for the homeless and created greeting cards for patients at Howie's House. A new site that was added this year was the Swarthmore Fire Department where some learned how to put out fires, learned CPR and helped wash the firetrucks.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs. Cobb and to all the teachers involved for planning this massive and monumental endeavor, engaging our students in various community service in honor of Dr. King's legacy. And thank you to all parent volunteers who helped chaperone the kids at the various locations on this very special day of service.

Below you will find pictures from that day. More pictures can be found on our SHMS Info+ facebook page.

Our 6th and 7th graders honored Dr. King's legacy throughout the school as well. Projects included making dog pull toys for The Providence Animal Shelter, putting together comfort kits for the Headstrong Foundation, assembling "Spoonful of Kisses" Valentine's treats for senior centers and writing greeting cards for cancer patients and active duty soldiers within our community.

On January 16, our district came together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s life and legacy through dance, speeches, music and service. The SHMS HSA hosted a table at this event where anyone could put together "Spoonful of Kisses" treats which were donated to the Fair Acres Senior Center in Media.

We hope this day encourages our whole community to get out there and help different organizations in any way.

Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve...You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Direct Donations

Just a friendly reminder that although our Fall Campaign is over, we do welcome direct donations all year long. Our goal this year is $10,000 (which would be the total amount if at least half of all SHMS families donated $25).  To date, we have collected $4772, almost halfway towards our target goal!  We thank all of you who supported our Direct Donation campaign.

For 2023 contributions, check with your employer to see if they offer donation-matching.  You may make an online donation via PayPal or QR code, or you can drop off or mail cash/check (payable to “SHMS HSA”) at the main office (200 S. Providence Rd. Wallingford. PA 19086). Thank you for supporting SHMS HSA!!

HSA Website Sponsorship

Are you looking to get your business noticed? Want to be a sponsor on the SHMS Home and School Association website? There is still time. You still have another half a school year to be part of the HSA website. For only $50 we can display your company logo and link your business website from our sponsorship section on our HSA website (. Fill out this intake form to start the process.

Thank you Joelyn Foster and all who donated to make this beautiful spread for our monthly teacher/staff coffee appreciation. They are so grateful!
