SUBJECT: SHMS HSA e-blast for 1.4.2023, MLK jr Day of Service, Career Day

January 4, 2023

Dear SHMS HSA families,

Happy New Year to all! We hope everyone had a restful winter break. We at the HSA look forward to all the events planned for the students and staff for the rest of the 2022-2023 school year!

On January 10, there is a Swarthmore Pizza fundraiser that will benefit the 8th grade service project, Kisses for Kyle. If you plan to dine in or take-out please be sure to mention the middle school service project and 15% of your bill will be donated.

8th grade MLK Jr. Day of Service

On January 13, the 8th graders will have their MLK Jr. day of service. They are scheduled to go to places such as Cradles to Crayons, City Team, and Widener Univ. Child Development Center where the students will be sorting out toys and clothing. Our 8th grade chorus will be headed to CADES to sing to students and participate in activities with the CADES kids.

The 8th grade teachers are looking for chaperones at various places where our students will be attending. If you can volunteer your time please look over the signup genius below for available spots. Fill out the volunteer form below and return to Krissy McIlhenney at the front office at your earliest convenience.

**We just received updated information and chaperones for this day of service will be considered a guest volunteer and will only be required to fill out and submit the volunteer form below. Clearances are preferred, but not required.

The 7th grade class needs your help. On January 13, for their MLK Jr. Day of Service they will be making dog toys with tennis balls and old t-shirts. These dog toys will be donated to the Providence Animal Shelter. If you have old tennis balls please leave them in the drop box at the front of the school before the 12th of January.

Our 6th graders will be participating in various service projects on the 13th as well. They will be involved in creating cards to active duty soldiers, putting together comfort kits for the Headstrong Foundation, and a Valentines treat, Spoonful of Kisses, for Fair Acres residents and other fun and exciting projects.

District Wide MLK Jr. Day of Service

ALL are welcome to attend the district-wide community-wide celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2023, 8:30AM-12:30PM at the SHMS gymnasium. The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service celebrates and honors the civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy of service, equality, and selflessness. This family-friendly event will include community service, educational activities, and performances. For more information: www.wssd.org/mlk.

The middle school HSA will have a table during this event. We will be continuing the efforts of the 6th grade class in putting together "Spoonful of Kisses" treats (see image below) and we are looking for volunteers. Please look over the Spoonful of Kisses Signup Genius for what help and supplies are needed.

With your help we can make all these events a huge success!

We look forward to seeing you!
